Sterling silver jewellery

Many people believe that sterling silver is actually pure, whereas in fact the term “sterling silver” originated over 800 years ago in England, and describes an alloy that consists of 92.5% silver. On its own silver is quite soft and it is necessary to add another alloy (copper being the most popular addition) to give strength and durability and to permit it to be used by silversmiths in the production of silver jewellery.

Today, most sterling silver is marked with a small, internationally accepted "925" and this mark is usually hammered in an inconspicuous place on the item. Traditionally silversmiths mostly made cutlery, candlesticks and fine tableware, but in more recent times their skills are mainly put to use in the silver jewellery industry with the decline of handmade solid silver tableware.
