Sterling silver jewellery

Many people believe that sterling silver is actually pure silver, whereas in fact the term “sterling silver” originated over 800 years ago in England, and describes an alloy that consists of 92.5% silver. Because silver on its own is quite soft it is necessary to add another alloy (copper being the most popular addition) to give strength to the silver and for it to be used by silversmiths in the product of silver jewellery.

Today, most sterling silver is marked with a small "925" and this mark is usually hammered in an inconspicuous place on the item. This mark is now internationally accepted as denoting sterling silver.
Traditionally silversmiths mostly made cutlery, candlesticks and fine tableware, but in more recent times their skills are put to use mainly in the silver jewellery industry with the decline of handmade solid silver tableware.
