The costume brooch is a favourite accessory of fashionistas everywhere, and rightly so. During the Early Bronze Age brooches were made of bone, wood and later, during the 9th and 10th centuries the brooch became popular for mass production and was used to fasten clothing
Brooches were often used in traditional dress, and women wore decorative ones to fasten their dresses. Men, before the Anglo-Norman invasion, used a brooch to secure their cloaks.
The costume brooch as we know it today became hugely popular during the Victorian era and the most contemporary pieces made a very powerful fashion statement as they tended to be large, highly colourful, and literally dripping in crystals, pearls and gemstones. During this era the jewellery brooch in the form of birds, flowers, insects and cameos were highly favoured.
Brooches tend to be worn far more creatively today. Whereas ladies used to wear them to keep clothing securely closed, today they are worn as an adornment more often than not. Fashion jewellery brooches are still often used to secure shawls and scarves but they look particularly great when pinned in the v of a neckline, or pinned to a handbag, belt or hat.
Take a look at your wardrobe. See if you own something a brooch can enhance. If you wear blazers, the right jewellery brooch would complement and complete the look! A heavy wool coat can always use one on the lapel.and even the scarves you wear can be draped and held in place by a beautiful brooch.
For everyday wear a costume brooch adds pizzazz to any ensemble and will give expression to your sense of style. The right brooch will complete your look and whether you’re wearing denims or that special black cocktail dress, why not add a touch of magic with a glamorous brooch!
